Finding a healthcare professional

Find a healthcare professional that you like and trust is important. It’s good to find a primary care provider (PCP), who can provide general healthcare and link you to specialty care if needed. Your insurance provider can typically help you find a healthcare provider in your area that will take your health insurance. A PCP, who might be a doctor or a nurse practitioner is an important relationship in your life and can help you address your health needs. They can help determine when an issue might be more serious and require special medical attention. For more information on a PCP vs. hospital/emergency room care see these two articles here and here, and remember to check out our page on LGBT health.

For information on how to find a healthcare provider, check out information on healthcare.gov.

To find a healthcare center that does not require health insurance and typically has a sliding fee scale, see this list of federally-qualified health centers.

If you are in the Chicago area, Streetlight has Chicago providers that are youth-friendly.

You can also check out SPIDER which allows you to search for providers, and youth in care or formerly in care can filter specifically for youth in care services.
