Types of Housing
leases
A rental agreement or lease is a written agreement between you (the tenant) and a landlord that explains the details of the use and occupancy of the property. A lease has to be in writing if the rental period is more than one year.
transitional housing
Temporary or transitional housing is provided for up to 24 months, and sometimes longer, to assist a formerly homeless households in making the transition to permanent housing. In many communities throughout Illinois, youth will need to go through the Coordinated Entry System to access transitional housing programs. (link)
public housing
Government-owned housing that is leased at a lower rate to low-income families, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Households usually pay 30% of their monthly income. If you are interested in applying for public housing, contact your local HA. If you have trouble contacting the HA, contact the local HUD Field Office.
supportive housing
Temporary or transitional housing is provided for up to 24 months, and sometimes longer, to assist a formerly homeless household (a youth alone can be a household) in making the transition to permanent housing. In Chicago, Cook County and other communities throughout Illinois, youth will need to go through the Coordinated Entry System to access transitional housing programs.
