Housing Choice and Family Unification Vouchers

Housing Vouchers

There are two main types of vouchers that you might be eligible for. Housing Choice Vouchers, often called Section 8 and Family Unification Vouchers (FUP). Family Unification Vouchers are ONLY for youth who were previously in DCFS care and/or families at risk of child placement due to homelessness. FUP vouchers are only available in some counties in Illinois.

public housing

Public Housing is housing that is owned by the government, so the government is your landlord. Public housing often has long waiting lists and sometimes may close their waiting list. But, public housing is leased at a lower rate to low-income families, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Households usually pay 30% of their monthly income. If you are interested in applying for public housing, contact your local Housing Authority. If you have trouble contacting the HA, contact the local HUD Field Office.
